Classical source

The 16 : 8 : 4 : 2 : 1 doubling series is attributed to the Sharangadhara Samhita.[1]

What it is used for

  • Prescribed for cold, cough with bronchitis, chest and throat congestion, and related respiratory complaints.[2]
  • Used for allergy and respiratory diseases.[3]

NAMASTE and ICD-11 codes are added at review.

What the evidence says

AnimalExtracts protected rat mast cells from degranulation at a level comparable to ketotifen in a laboratory model. This supports a possible anti-allergy action. It is not a clinical trial.[3]

In vitroStandards for checking the identity and quality of the powder have been published, comparing an in-house batch with two marketed brands.[2]

Safety notes

  • About half of the powder by weight is sugar (16 of 31 parts). This matters if you have diabetes.[1]
  • Contains pippali. Piperine from pippali raises phenytoin levels. See Pippali, black pepper and phenytoin.
